Fundamentals in Sewing: Beginner's Sewing Class in Garment Construction

Duration: 4 Weeks 

Date: Starts Thursday, 2nd Oct 2025 

Time: 7:00pm to 9:30pm (2.5hrs)

Unlock the basics of sewing your own clothes in this hands-on, beginner-friendly course.
Designed to take the mystery out of sewing, this class breaks down essential techniques into manageable steps to help you gain confidence and practical skills for making simple garments.

WHAT YOU'LL LEARN (Over 4 Weeks): 

• Week 1: Introduction to hand stitching and how to use a sewing machine

• Week 2: Finishing techniques – edge finishes, bound edges, and facings

• Week 3: Common closures – button loops, rouleaux straps, and centered zippers

• Week 4: Dressmaking basics – cutting fabric, shaping with darts, and assembling a half-size A-line dress

Each week, you’ll create “apprentice pieces” that let you focus on mastering specific techniques before applying them to a full project.

MEER YOUR TUTOR – EIMEAR GREANEY: 

Eimear Greaney (upsew.ie) is a qualified Pattern Cutter with a wealth of experience in both dressmaking and teaching. Passionate about sharing her skills, Eimear is known for her clear instruction, supportive approach, and ability to make complex techniques feel simple and accessible for beginners.

COURSE DETAILS:

• Duration: 4 weekly sessions, 2.5 hours each (evenings)
  
  

COST INCLUDES:

• Tuition, tea, coffee and biscuits.

• All participants receive detailed course notes with step-by-step instructions, helpful tips, and suggestions for further learning.
  
  

WHAT TO BRING: 

• A working sewing machine
• Basic Sewing Kit: Polyester thread, thread snips, tailors chalk/pencil or water soluble fabric marker, sewing pins, seam ripper/un-picker

Don’t have a sewing machine?

A limited number of sewing machines are available to rent. Please get in touch to reserve one in advance.

CANCELLATION POLICY:

• If you need to cancel this course one month prior to start date a full refund will be given less third party payment provider fees, two weeks prior to the course a 50% refund will be given. After that time there is no refund given. Your place can be transferred to a friend but this is only for events that have not yet started. You cannot send someone in your place half way through a course.
• We reserve the right to reschedule undersubscribed courses. We will try to give as much notice as possible for events that need to be rescheduled. In the unlikely situation that the event is cancelled you will receive as much notice as possible. We will try to make the event up in the future on the same day and time. 
• Should Fabric Romance cancel a course or individual class and we are unable to reschedule, a full refund will be made within 10 business days, however, a refund will not be issued for any classes cancelled due to extreme weather conditions or any other event beyond our control.
