This year has seen a huge revival of home sewing and dressmaking skills. Whether you have just picked up this therapeutic hobby or are an experienced sewist, Christmas (and in particular Christmas gifts) can prove a challenge for mindful makers. This is where our sustainable gift guide comes into its own, proving that being conscious of your impact on the Earth doesn't have to mean gifting rubbish (or no) presents at Christmas.
Take a look and be inspired to get crafty with this list of eco-friendly gifts:
1. Make Reusable Cleansing Pads
Save a loved one money in the long run and help improve the environment by gifting reusable makeup remover pads made from our organic cotton molleton or organic terry cloth. Both materials are soft and gentle on the skin and can be used to make nursing pads, baby wipes and many other projects.
Good to know: Organic cotton is grown without harmful chemicals and is kinder to skin, making it a good choice for allergy and eczema sufferers.
If you search online you will find no shortage of easy tutorials how to make reusable makeup remover wipes. They are a super quick project and make a lovely gift that will sure be appreciated. For a free template for DIY nursing pads and tutorial head over to Worthy Design Studio.

2. Make Reusable Fruit & Veg Shopping Bags
Say no to single use plastic and make reusable, washable fruit and vegetable shopping bags with our 'Carry Bags' cotton fabric panel. One panel will allow you to sew five practical cotton mesh bags, including a bag to fit a long French baguette. These bags make a wonderfully sustainable present. Know someone who is learning to sew? This fabric panel would make a great gift for a beginner sewist.
3. Wooden Sewing Ruler
Fabric Romance has teamed up with the fabulous Jen Hogg (Great British Sewing Bee semi-finalist 2019) for a special edition of her unique wooden sewing rulers and we are here for it! These little square rulers will make a useful addition to any sewing tool box. They come in either metric or imperial. A great little gift for aspiring and experienced dressmakers alike. They are also perfect for filling out the awkward space around the Christmas stocking heel we are told.
4. Cork Pin Cushion
Help a sewist keep their pins and needles organised with this beautifully crafted pin cushion. Choose between Oak or Pine base. These are handmade pieces, sculpted from FSE certified and sustainably sourced wood and cork. Made in Portugal.
5. Sashiko Christmas Kits
Our Sashiko Bag and Decoration kits are a perfect gift for the festive season. These kits offer a great opportunity to practise the art of Japanese sashiko stitching which was traditionally used to reinforce or mend worn fabric or tears with patches, making the darned piece stronger and warmer. These days Sashiko stitching (and/or Boro) is finding a place in modern society as a fashionable way of mending and upcycling garments in need of repair - Sashiko stitching is a wonderfully sustainable skill to learn.

6. Gift Voucher
Let your loved ones be in control of the fabric and haberdashery they purchase and treat a sewing lover to a present they’ll love, a Fabric Romance Gift Voucher!
We hope this list of sustainable gift ideas has given you some inspiration.
